We have already written about mushrooms’ uses in skincare, but now Dyson has released a new pre-style hair cream and a post-style serum that use chitosan, a substance found in oyster mushrooms, to give hair an all-day hold.
The products come in four formulas, depending on your hair texture and conditioning preference. They claim to protect hair from frizz, even in high humidity.
So, what is Chitosan?
Chitosan is derived from chitin, a biopolymer found in the cell walls of mushrooms. Historically, it has been mainly produced from crustacean exoskeletons; however, in recent years, chitosan from fungi, being vegan, has gained interest in the market.
It is biodegradable and has previously been used in antimicrobial films for food packaging, agriculture, and wound dressings.
Each bottle of Dyson’s product is said to contain the equivalent of eight oyster mushrooms, but Dyson is not the first hair brand to use chitosan in its products.
Herbal Essences use Chitosan in their spray gels, Briogeo in their hair conditioners, and Aussie in their spray gels.
