The Humongous Fungus Festival in Crystal Falls, Michigan is back, and it’s bigger and better than ever!
The event runs from August 23 to August 24, 2024, and is adding many new events to the roster this year, ensuring a fun-filled day for all the family.
Kicking off the events are city-wide rummage sales, including the Mansfield Pioneer Church fundraising rummage sale in front of Superior Sport and Feed, both days starting at 9 am. Maps with all the other rummage sale locations are available on the Humongous Fungus Fest Facebook page.
Also on Friday, bingo will be held at the Masonic Temple at 815 Crystal Avenue. Doors will open at 5 pm, and the games will start at 6 p.m.
The main events will take place on Saturday 24th, starting with a bang with the Humongous Fungus Fest Parade at 10 am. People wishing to spectate are available to line up along Superior Ave.
Local Homesteader Sean Ackles will be holding two mushroom foraging trips and educating those who tag along on the top ten mushrooms around Crystal Falls. The morning group checks in at 8:30 am for a tour from 9 am to noon, and the afternoon group checks in at 12:30 pm for a tour from 1 pm to 4 pm. The tours cost $60 per person and include a bus trip to the tour location. Sign-up forms for these tours are available on the Crystal Falls Website.
Those looking to shop and support local small businesses are in luck! The Friends of Crystal Falls Library will hold a book sale outside the library from 9 am until 3 p.m., and the Vendor Village will be at 4th Street and the Grassy Knoll behind the Crystal Theatre and Harbour House from 10 am until 3 pm.
Foodies in the area will be spoilt for choice, too. The Christ United Methodist Church’s annual pie social will take place from 10 am until 2 pm, and Harbour House will be serving Mushroom Burgers and Hot dogs from 10 am until 5 pm. They will also be hosting the Mushroom Cook-off contest at 1 pm, with the only theme for the dishes being that they must contain mushrooms!
Of course, the traditional Humongous Fungus Pizza will be making a return. The pizza is a humongous 100 square feet and will be served at Crystal Steel House, behind Ben Franklin, in the early afternoon. Topped with pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms, it will surely be a sight to behold!
If you’re looking for activities for the kids, chalk will be available on Superior Ave. all day for Chalk Art Drawing alongside the Artemis Archers, who will be set up in Charlie’s Emporium from 11:30 am until 2 pm. Children can shoot at targets, balloons, records, and stuffed animals.
Another brand new event for this year is the Soap Box Derby! Lineup and inspections will begin at 11 am, and races will begin at noon; with races going down Marquette Ave. Anyone who wishes to sign up should visit Superior Sport and Feed or call 906-874-1131.
Ending the festivities this year will be “That 70s Music ‘24” at the Crystal Theatre at 7 pm.
